Roger Federer played 1,421 matches so far as a professional player winning 1,166 and losing 256 of them. ‘It’s been a lot of matches and I remember some very vividly’, Federer admitted. ‘Some I’ve started to forget, which I guess is a good sign.

I’m taking it that way. Yeah, I have had some tough losses over the years, but I’ve also had some of the most incredible feelings out there. I never thought as a kid I would ever cry after I won matches, because I always used to cry after I lost every single match when I was sort of from 8 to basically 15.It was always emotional because I always tried my best, and whenever I lost for me it was tragic. So the first time I was able to sort of‑‑ I cried after I have won a match, I was like, What the hell is happening to me? I can’t believe I care so much about this sport which I love so much.

Italian tennis continues to have a crazy time. Italy is off to a great start with the four Slam semifinals in which it will be a major player (between Thursday and Friday): Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori qualified for the final act of the men’s doubles at Roland Garros by overcoming the two specialists, number one on the Atp Race, Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden.

It is another historic achievement by the 38-year-old from Bologna and the 29-year-old from Turin, who have become this year one of the strongest pairs in the world in this discipline. The numbers confirm it: after the Internazionali d’Italia, the Italian duo repeated themselves and once again beat the best, winning their second consecutive Slam final.

In fact, already at the Australian Open Bolelli and Vavassori had surprised the competition by going all the way in the event. Italy will return to play the final act in the men’s doubles even after 65 years since the last time: in 1959 Nicola Pietrangeli and Orlando Sirola succeeded, before a gap that lasted a very long time.
