She will face the toughest test the draw could have given her: second seed and reigning champion Aryna Sabalenka, the same woman Gauff defeated last year at Flushing Meadows to win the US Open. Sabalenka beat Barbora Krejcikova 6-2 6-3 in the quarter-finals.
It will be the seventh time the pair have faced off in WTA competition, with Gauff winning four of their six prior meetings. Sabalenka’s victories against Gauff came at Indian Wells last year and at Ostrava in 2020.Gauff will meet Sabalenka in the Australian Open semi-finals on Thursday 25 January.
The match will take place on Rod Laver Arena but the time of the match and order of play is yet to be finalised.
