Oleksandr Usyk could end his career if he follows the example of Roy Jones Jr

Oleksandr Usyk is considering a return to the cruiserweight division, where his professional boxing journey began. Usyk, who recently cemented his legacy by becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion, achieved a historic victory on May 18 by defeating Tyson Fury, handing him his first career loss and becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999.

This has sparked his interest in moving back to the cruiserweight category, a significant shift that could be challenging at 37 years old, considering the physical toll such a weight cut might take, reminiscent of the difficulties faced by Roy Jones Jr. in his career.

In a recent interview with “3 Knockdown Rule,” Usyk discussed his potential return to cruiserweight after his rematch with Tyson Fury, scheduled for December.

“Maybe I can be undisputed for a second time in the cruiserweight division, it’s my plan,” he noted.

“When I start my [heavyweight] training camps, I’m eating all the time. For me, it’s hard, I don’t like it. Three times [per day]. Water, protein, bananas, it’s a lot of food.”

Usyk’s last fight in the cruiserweight division was in 2018 against Tony Bellew at Manchester Arena. He launched his professional career as a cruiserweight in 2013 and moved up to heavyweight in 2019 with a fight against Chazz Witherspoon.
