TENNIS STAR SIMONA HALEP SWAPS THE COURT FOR THE COURTROOM IN DOPING CHALLENGE WEDNESDAY IN LAUSANNESimona Halep’s trial will begin at the Court of Arbwitration for Sport on Wednesday and the former World No.1 will attend in person after initially being suspended by an independent tribunal for four years.
Halep was found guilty of two breaches of the Tennis Anti-Doping programme and has since appealed the decision and her case will be held at the CAS Headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
The independent body usually have the final say when it comes to settling disputes. Two procedures will run side by side over the course of the coming days in Halep vs the International Tennis Integrity Agency and the reverse so ITIA vs Halep.CAS confirmed on Tuesday that despite the hearing taking place behind closed doors, Halep will be there while other parties such as witnesses and experts will be there both in person and virtually.
Proceedings get underway at 09:30am local time on February 7 with opening submissions followed by testimonies. Final submissions will be set on the last day on February 9.
Albeit a decision does not have a set date with CAS already confirming that they cannot give any indication of when a final decision will be sent to the parties and the public. Halep has seen her tennis career put on hold during this time after testing positive for the substance Roxudustat in a urine sample at the US Open during a defeat to Daria Snigur back in 2022. She was provisionally suspended in October of that year as a result with Halep already curtailing her season at that point due to nose surgery. But she has since seen delays aplenty and her ranking completely be expunged as she waits for the verdict which she will now appeal as expected.
