Zheng Qinwen said Aryna Sabalenka should be ready for War as she’s ready to be stunned as she plays her first grand slam tournaments finals
Zheng Qinwen said she can’t quite believe she’s made it all the way to a the final of a grand slam.
“It feels unbelievable – I mean, I’m super excited to have such a great performance today and arrive in the final,” she told Alicia Molik.
“It’s tough to explain my feeling now … thanks for all the support and thanks to my team as well.”
Perhaps not super confident with her english, Molik gave Zheng the opportunity to address the massive Chinese contingent in Rod Laver Arena with a few words in Cantonese.
This scribe is a monolingual, but whatever she said absolutely roused the fans.Zheng Qinwen is through to her first major final, defeating Dayana Yastremska in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
It’s 10 years to the day since Li Na won the Australian Open in 2014.
For Yastremska, it ends what’s been an incredible three weeks at Melbourne Park.
She made it through three qualifiers and then six man-draw clashes to the semifinalWowee! It’s Yastremska’s set now!
She’s come from 2-1 down to take a scintillating 3-2 lead.
Zheng has completely lost her momentum.
Zheng still leads one set to none..Zheng’s grip on this match is tightening – she’s now a set and a break up over Yastremska.
Has the Ukrainian got anything in the tank, or is this hip flexor issue proving too much?Zheng has clinched this opening set against Dayana Yastremska.
She’s not moving with as much freedom as she was at the start of the match, but she’s certainly looking better than she did before that medical timeout.
Both players have actually left the court between sets on Rod Laver Arena.
It’s been over seven minutes since the end of the previous set. It looks as though both ladies have had a wardrobe change.
It’s still raining outside – perhaps it’s quite humid in RLA.This is not good – Qinwen Zheng just broke Yastremska, but all is not well with the Ukrainian.
She pulled up lame at the end of a point, and has now taken a medical timeout. It looks like it’s maybe a lower abdominal issue, or maybe something in the hip area.
She’s gone off court, and Zheng is doing some practice serves to keep warm.
This is Yastremska’s ninth match of her Australian Open campaign.Coming through quallies … all the matches to get to here, from experience when you get on a run, a hip flexor, that part of the area, it can get overused,” Todd Woodbridge explained in commentary for Nine.
“It’s got to do with the serving, the stretching, then the landing on that left leg, and then driving off.
“That will be what they’re trying to loosen up in that training room right now. But it’s hard to fix something when it’s overuse.”
She’s back out there now, and looks to be moving a bit better.A big moment for the Ukrainian qualifier has gone begging!
She broke Zheng with her first service game, but then coughed up four double faults in the very next game to be broken straight back.
Todd Woodbridge described it as a “gift”.
